It starts with the fascination of mezcal…
You’re probably reading this because mezcal has found you and fired up a fascination you never thought you’d have. You are not alone. Long considered a magical spirit due to its deep connection to Mexican culture and belief that its origins are tied to ancient rituals where the drink was seen as a way to commune with the gods. Still using venerable methods, hand-crafted, requiring Herculean manpower and mystical intuition, nothing captures a people and a place like mezcal.
Our place, our “palenque” is nestled in the foothills of Mitla just outside Oaxaca City. Mitla is where one of the oldest civilizations, the Zapotecs, buried their Gods and believed it to be the gateway between world and underworld. The Zapotecans worshipped many Gods of fertility and agriculture, and it seems they have instilled an energy that still pulses through the valley, the farms and the mezcaleros here.
Our maestro mezcalero, Miguel Angel Zamora Olivo, apprenticed for many years with elder mezcaleros and now brings his own unique skills from harvesting to distilling. Always taking the traditional practices a step or two further with reverence to the plants and extra painstaking processes during distillation, Miguel has created mezcals like no other. From wild agaves to rich ańejos, El Cabrón offers a range of complex mezcals we think you don’t want to miss.
The word “cabrón” is deeply embedded in Mexican culture with many meanings depending on circumstance and tone, but the ultimate expression of awestruck astonishment is “Esta Cabrón!”
And so – we bring you our mezcals that are the product of the rich confluence of this place, these people, these agaves and this spirit:
“EL CABRÓN” - exceptional mezcals from an exceptional place by exceptional people.
